Creating videos with AI is no easy feat, especially compared to generating images. While there are plenty of impressive AI image generators out there, when it comes to videos, the options are more limited. Two of the most popular and advanced models are Google's Veo 3 and OpenAI's Sora 2.

Veo 3 and Sora 2: A Brief Introduction

On the other hand, OpenAI's Sora 2 made its debut on September 30 as a standalone iOS app. It's the successor to OpenAI's first AI video model, also named Sora. Currently, Sora 2 is only accessible through the invite-only Sora app, which also offers a TikTok-like feed of AI-generated videos.
Testing the Waters: Our Comparison Methodology
To ensure a fair comparison, we enlisted the help of another AI tool, ChatGPT, to craft prompts for our video tests. These prompts were designed to challenge different aspects of video creation, from audio to animation.
We tested the models with a variety of prompts, each designed to push the boundaries of what AI video generation can achieve.
Prompt 1: A Cinematic Stroll in Tokyo
Our first prompt was a simple yet creative challenge: follow a young woman walking through a crowded Tokyo street at night during a light rain. The goal was to capture the cinematic feel of neon signs reflecting off wet asphalt and umbrellas.
Both Sora 2 and Veo 3 delivered visually appealing videos, but there were some notable differences. Sora 2's video had a tighter crop, making the background details less visible, while Veo 3 offered a wider angle, creating a more immersive experience.
What's interesting is how the generators interpreted the prompt. Sora 2 added an umbrella to the woman, even though the prompt didn't explicitly ask for it, while Veo 3's video was more detailed and overall more impressive.
Winner: Veo 3
Prompt 2: Superhero Landing
In this prompt, we challenged the models to create videos of copyrighted characters. Surprisingly, Sora 2 refused to create the video, citing potential intellectual property infringement.
Veo 3, on the other hand, produced a video, but it wasn't without its issues. The superhero's face looked more animated than real, and the generator struggled with physics, making the video less convincing.
Winner: Veo 3 (by default)
Prompt 3: Cyberpunk Times Square
Both Veo 3 and Sora 2 excelled at this prompt, creating futuristic versions of Times Square filled with holographic ads and flying cars. Both followed the instruction to display specific words on a billboard.
Sora 2 did a slightly better job at capturing the aesthetic of Into the Spider-Verse, but Veo 3's video was more engaging with its movement and dynamic lighting.

Prompt 4: A Heart-to-Heart Conversation
This prompt tested the generators' ability to create audio that matched the video. Both Veo 3 and Sora 2 have the capability to add dialogue and sound effects.
Visually, Veo 3 delivered on the prompt's request for 2D animation, while Sora 2 opted for a 3D style. The audio generated by Sora 2 was a bit off, with the characters sounding like they were sleep-talking. Veo 3's dialogue, on the other hand, was more lively and realistic.

Prompt 5: Dancing in the Streets
One of Sora 2's standout features is its ability to create videos featuring real people, known as cameos. We put this feature to the test by attempting to create a video of ourselves dancing in the street.
Sora 2 made this process easy, as it's a supported feature within the app. Veo, however, made it more challenging. Google's Ingredients to Video feature, which allows users to upload images for the generator to use, is not supported by Veo 3.
In our tests, we found that Gemini often refused to make videos based on pictures featuring people, likely to prevent deepfakes. This limitation makes it difficult to use Veo 3 for animating still images, a common use case for AI video.
Both videos had their quirks, but Sora 2 did a better job at making the subject actually dance.

Prompt 6: Copyrighted Characters
